DATATRAC Radio Trends IV: Commercial Tolerance and Listenership

This summary of our national findings over multi-markets reflects key listenership responses and trends regarding commercial tolerance, content, production and programming for music radio stations.

Commercial Listenership on Favorite Music Station - When tuned to their favorite music station, how many commercials will P-1s "tolerate" before changing to another station? Overall, 27% say that they tune-out when the first commercial begins. This is particularly true among Rock (30%) and Hot AC (29%) station P-1s. Two of ten will switch from their favorite music station when the second commercial starts (21%). An additional 16% indicate tune-out when the third spot in a stop-set begins. One of four (26%) say that they will typically listen to all the commercials – most often P-1s of Oldies/AC (35%) and Country (28%) stations. By comparison, significantly fewer P-1s of Hot AC/CHR (20%) or Rock (23%) stations say that they will listen to all the spots during a commercial break.
